You did it well, without excessive awfulness. And of course we know that all the puppies were rescued and got good homes, and the ones who passed away weren't in pain. And they can get reincarnated and be in HAPPY stories.
I can sort of understand the temptation to have puppies that STAY PUPPIES - although I would NOT want to have to housetrain another one. Border collies are probably easier - they're SMART, right? - but Calvin - it's not like he didn't GET it, exactly, it's more that he didn't CARE.
